This work is going to deal with some of the many issues connected with the contemporary approaches in the monitoring of the students ’ development in the primary schools. In details, it is going to deal with some of the aspects and methods of monitoring, testing and assessment of the students’ achievements in the primary schools.
One of the reasons for highlighting this problem is the justification of the changes in this educational segment which is correspondent to the mission of the primary school, that actually exists in order to provide:
• an education which respects and develops the individual needs, interests and affinities of the person;
• an education which is going to enable development of an independent, open, critical and democratic person with abilities and competences for action. (National programme for educational development in Republic of Macedonia 2005-2015, 2006: 101). The development and introduction of a new concept for descriptive assessment within the first grades of the primary school is only one aspect from the overall changes that take place in the primary education in R. Macedonia. As changes in the assessment are necessary to happen simultaneously with the rest of the changes and as an integral part of them, so will the conception for descriptive assessment develop and function as an integral part of the system for assessment (evaluation) within the education of this country.
