During the Third Crusade (1189–1192), in the interval from the first decade of December 1189 to the first half of January 1190, the north-western Macedonian region of Polog, part of Byzantium, was conquered by the Serbian grand župan Stephen Nemanja and incorporated into the newly established Serbian medieval state. After the Battle of Morava (autumn 1190), the victorious Byzantine forces restored Polog within the framework of Byzantium.
