The reform changes undergoing in the US educational system in recent years, have been emphasizing the issue of teacher education and the teacher profile it should create. The article examines the current situation and the transformations that the teaching profession in the country is facing with, as well as the direction in which it is moving towards.
The main attention is focused on examination of three, issues: law regulations on teaching profession, initial preparation of teachers, and teacher professional development. The analysis of all these topics underlines the importance of the standards and expectations that must be met by the American teacher, as they are considered key mechanisms for effective teaching and education.
