The paper reviews the most important theoretical frameworks concerning the place of social mobility in the study ofpolitical participation. It is shown that the interest for social mobility studies is strong since the very establishment of political sociology as separate discipline during the 50-s and 60s of the twentieth century. The long studied relation between social mobility and political participation is reviewed within the classical and contemporary sociological theories of social stratification and the theory of democracy.
